Boston Marathon Tribute Run

Although the North Shore Striders have been silent the past few days on our website and social media, that doesn't mean that our thoughts and prayers haven't been with all those affected by the bomb blasts at the Boston Marathon.  Many of us had family or friends in Boston running the marathon or cheering on someone running it.  Thankfully, we have had no reports of injury to any local runners or their families.  The horrible events that transpired at the end of the race are reprehensible on many levels.  A day that was supposed to celebrate weeks and years of dedication and hard work instead turned into a day that will affect aspects of our sport for years to come.

The Board of Directors of the North Shore Striders will dedicate our next group run to those affected by the bombings in Boston.  We encourage runners and non-runners alike to come out in support for those injured on Monday.  There will be a free-will offering collected at the run that will be sent to The One Fund Boston, Inc. to help those afflicted by the attack.  Everyone is encouraged to wear a race shirt or blue and yellow as a visual show of support.

Volunteer Opportunities on the Superior Hiking Trail

As the snows decrease and the weather slowly warms, our thoughts turn to getting back onto the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) for our runs.

The storm of  June 19–20, 2012 destroyed some of the trail in Mission Creek and Jay Cooke State Park. Rehabbing and rerouting damaged trail will be one of the top priorities for Larry Sampson, Duluth Maintenance and Construction Supervisor, this May.

Other areas of focus will be:
* Placing final touches on the new construction between the Martin Road and Normanna Road trailheads. These sections will officially open on National Trails Day,  June 1, 2013.
* Weed whipping and brushing.  Beginning in late June and extending through August, crews will be out cleaning up the 90+ miles of trail between Duluth and Two Harbors.

If you would like to help out please contact Larry at lbsampson@msn.com.

I hope that everyone has been spending lots of time in the pool and is looking forward to the Superior Distance Swim Challenge 2013. Below is an entry form for this year's event. Be sure to spread the word if you know of any other swimmers that you think might enjoy participating. This year's event is a bit later on the calendar due to some scheduling conflicts at the high school and for your event coordinator. Janet, Megan, and I hope to see you all in the pool again this year for a fun day of team and individual challenges. Your entry supports SHS Swimming and Diving programs and the pool facility. My goal as a coordinator is to promote lifelong sports, especially swimming, and to provide a unique non-intimidating annual event for community participation. Come join us again in this year.
