The first race of the NMTC Spring Trail Series, the Millenium Trail Run, took place today in Superior.  The overall winners were Adam Swank with a time of 20:59 and Elaine Nelson with a time of 23:24.  The course distance was 3.5 miles.

Two local runners recently placed well on the national marathon scene.

 

Congratulations to Jen Houck for finishing 17th in the women's division of the Boston Marathon.  Jen's time of 2:39:02 qualifies her for the 2012 US Olympic trials.

Congratulations also to Eric Harmark for winning the inaugural Exeter Marathon in Exeter, Rhode Island, on April 17th.  Eric ran a 2:21:44, almost 19 minutes ahead of the nearest competitor.

DULUTH, MN - A record 1,582 people registered for yesterday’s 21st annual Fitger’s 5K Run & Walk in downtown Duluth.

Duluth’s Jeremy Polson, 32, claimed the men’s division, successfully defending his title from a year ago, winning in 15 minutes and 35 seconds. Katie Koski, 37, also of Duluth, won the women’s crown with a time of 18:23.

A total of 1,361 finishers (1,251 runners, 110 walkers) completed the 3.1-mile course through Duluth’s downtown.

All net proceeds from the Fitger’s 5K benefit the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF), a Grandma's Marathon program focused on the promotion and development of youth athletics in the Northland.

Congratulations to Marc Malinoski and Julie Hendrickson, winners of the Duluth YMCA's Dip, Ride & Dash on April 11th.  The race was an indoor triathlon at the Y and consisted of 10 minutes in the pool, 30 minutes on a spin bike, and 20 minutes on the track or treadmill.  The event raised over $500 for the YMCA's String Kids Campaign and will be used to help fund youth programs.

Gene Bratek, head of the Marshall School, wrote the following letter to parents this week.  We are republishing it here, with his permission, to help spread the word in the running community.

 

Dear Parents,
We want you to be aware of the following information we will share with students today. While we have not received reports on our campus, we want to be proactive in getting information to our community.

 

The Duluth Police Department has received several reports from around the Kenwood, UMD, Chester Bowl, and Skyline Parkway areas that a white male possibly in his late 30’s with brown hair has been following women in his vehicle while they are jogging. It has been reported that he is driving a white 4 door Dodge Stratus possibly with the letters AUZ in the license plate.

We want to remind students to be extra cautious when they are on or off campus near the school. Students should always be with another person when they are outdoors; avoid walking or running alone. If a vehicle stops to talk or if someone approaches on foot, students should run away, scream for help, and call 9-1-1 as soon as possible even if it means going to a nearby house or business for assistance. Students should always communicate their whereabouts with an adult and let someone else know their plan of where they’ll be and when they’ll return. Students should never leave campus when they should be on campus. Any suspicious activity should be reported to an adult and the police. These simple steps will help to keep everyone safer. Please be mindful of these precautions. The safety of our students is our number one priority.
