July 22, 2007: Race Recap - Oulu Rock Run

The Oulu Rock Run took place on Saturday at Oulu's Pioneer Memorial Park. Thirty runners participated in the 5k run and 1.3 mile run/walk. They were cheered on by several spectators and race voluteers. The route was a grassy cross-country course on mowed paths through woods and fields. The top three men and women in each race received coveted Oulu Rock awards.

Mike Ostrenga won the men's 5k race in 18:37. Mike, like several of the runners, ran the Park Point 5-miler the night before. "I felt tight in the beginning but loosened up later in the race", said Mike. Mike's daughter Emma won the women's division of the 1.3 mile race. Mike is looking forward to running the Paavo Nurmi Marathon with his brothers in August.

Joe Weyers finished second in the men's 5k race with a time of 20:19. Joe ran with Mike for the first 3/4 of a mile and liked the cross-country style of the course. Joe ran for Northwestern in high school and currently is a middle school teacher in Winter Haven, Florida.

Shari Olson and Marsha Scherz finished first and second in the women's 5k race with times of 23:26 and 24:35, respectively. Both women are librarians in the Maple School District and appreciated that the course was on grass instead of pavement.

Pat Moreland, age 77, completed the 5k course in 40:40. A local legend, Pat has run seventy marathons in his lifetime, a feat made more remarkable when you consider that he didn't start running until age 50. Pat is also known for his streak - he has run every day for the last 19 1/2 years. "I started on December 10th, 1987, and the goal was to go for a month", said Pat. Pat doesn't know how long he will continue his streak, but he would like to at least hit the twenty-year mark. Currently plagued by a few back pains, Pat runs up to six miles per day, depending on how his back feels.

The llama division of 1.3 mile race was hotly contested this year with the Martens family completing the course with their four llamas: Panda, Honeypie, Comet, and Cupid. The athletes ran a close race for thirty-eight minutes. The contest came down to the wire and appeared to end in an unprecedented four-way tie.
