September 29, 2011: Rolling Stone Recap
Rolling Stone, the 4th race of the NMTC Fall Trail Series, took place last night at Spirit Mountain. We had a small snafu as someone removed some of the course markings, but everyone appears to have made it back OK. Thank you to Dan Proctor and Eve Stein for marking the course.
Thank you, too, to Charlie Rounds for once again voluteering to be the course sweep. Since the medical emergency we experienced during the first race, Charlie has taken it upon himself to run last with a walkie-talkie and report any problems. We will continue to experiment with communication devices and emergency plans this season with an eye for having things firmed up for next year's Spring Series.
Congratulations are in order for Amanda Joyce and Eric Atkinson for winning yet again this week. Even more remarkably, Amanda's time of 25:09 was just 24 seconds off of Kari Beasley's course record set in 1996. Leslie Semler, Molly Pennings, Taylor Marble, and Tonya Thompson all qualified for the women's best time list. No men qualified this week.

September 21, 2011: Brown's Point Recap
Brown's Point, the 3rd race of the NMTC Fall Trail Series, took place today on the City of Superior's ski trails. Despite it's name, Brown's Point was run on the green and blue ski trails due to the Brown's Point trails being unmowed.
Amanda Joyce won her second race in a row with a time of 25:00, and Eric Atkinson continued his sweep of the men's races, winning in 21:46.
Molly Pennings has a 4-point lead in the close women's point standings. Tonya Thompson and Taylor Marble are tied for 2nd. Eric Atkinson has a 7-point lead over Paul Kimpling in the men's point standings.
Several runners spotted two black bear cubs and possibly also an adult bear on the course. We'd like to thank them for not eating anyone.
Kris has two shirts that were left at Zapp's Loop last week. If they are yours, you can claim them at registration next week.

September 19, 2011: Superior High School Alumni Race
I'm looking for male and female runners to run in our annual alumni meet in Superior (Nemadji Golf Course) against the high school team. Our idea of an alumni is anyone who has driven through Superior. No awards, just a chance to test yourself against a high school team on a fast 5000 meter (men) or 4000 meter (women) course. It's a fun time. Did you ever wonder how you would do against high school kids?
The meet will be held on Sept. 27th (Tues.) with men running at 4:30 and women at 5:00. Any questions, call me at 715-398-6006 or email danc111@centurytel.net.
Thanks,
Dan Conway
September 18, 2011: City of Duluth Trail Plans
The City of Duluth has put together a master plan for how it wants to manage the trails and bike paths on city property. As we all know, Duluth has miles of high quality trails that many of us enjoy year-round. The city's goal is to have a master plan for managing the trail system as a whole instead of as individual pieces. The city would like to connect existing trails together and build new trails in areas of town that currently do not have a lot of trail access. The master plan covers all kinds of trails, from minimalist trails such as the Superior Hiking Trail to paved biking trails such as the Lakewalk.
At this point the Master Plan is a draft, and the city would like to public to weigh in with feedback on it. Three public meetings will be held about the plan. The first was last Wednesday; the next two are Monday night and Wednesday night of this week.
The draft and more information about the planning process is available here:
September 15, 2011: Zapp's Loop
One hundred and eighteen runners (and a few volunteers) braved cold, wind, and hail during Zapp's Loop last night. Congratulations to Amanda Joyce, Leslie Semler, Eric Atkinson, and Craig Hertz for qualifying for the Zapp's Loop Best Time List.
