I represent all the mothers out there who, like me, have discovered a precious gift in running.  I have also discovered that coming in last in a race is not the absolute worst thing in the world!  I run for the sheer love of it, for the health benefits of it, and for the positive impact it has on my girls.  Welcome to my blog!

November 27, 2007: Gobble Gallop!

On Thanksgiving morning, our group of 7 runners and 2 picture takers/cheerleaders headed out for the second annual Gobble Gallop in Duluth.  As we left home, it was a balmy 11 degrees, and by race time it had only warmed to about 14 degrees.  Brrrr....but sunny skies and that beautiful Lake Superior made up for the cold.  We all sat in the van to keep warm, and weren't really sure when to come out to line up for the start (there were a lot of race day registrations in line which made the race start late by about 10 minutes--but no big deal!).  We kept seeing others meandering around like the start was not for awhile...then we saw a few come out of their vehicles so we all did too, and pretty much when we set foot onto the road, the race began.  Good timing.  It was actually very nice running weather and I, for once this fall, didn't overdress.  I was happy that I wore all I did.  We were not able to bring our gang of seven kids for the walk like several of them did last year, but with the cold temps we were glad things turned out the way they did.  They would not have enjoyed it as much as last year, when they were taking off their jackets and mittens shortly after starting!  I was able to run the whole 5k, which made me VERY, VERY happy.  I have not been able to run an entire 5k since my hip incident in July, so this race was kind of a new starting point for me.  I kept at my slow and steady pace, and everything felt really good.  I was actually a little surprised at how good I felt!  For me, just being out there running again brings a smile to my face.  I have missed this so much!  I even picked up the pace at the finish (I usually sprint the best I can through a finish line), but I was still cautious with my hip, so I didn't run crazy fast or anything (those who know me are asking themselves, "Have we ever seen Jen run crazy fast?").  It really felt good and I am very happy with the race.  We returned to our homes and stuffed ourselves silly like everyone else.  I want to thank the Duluth Running Co. for doing a fantastic job with the race.  It was fun and our gang has definitely marked it on our race calendars as a yearly tradition!  Gobble Gobble!

I'm so glad you felt good the whole way! I'm sorry I never got back to you about meeting there, though. I needed to get back home right away, so I'm thinking it might not have turned out easily, anyway. Congrats, though! I'm glad you loved it as well.

Thanks Sam! Glad you could do the run AND host the meal! No problem about meeting, someday we'll all meet and then realize we've seen each other at races for years!
