From the Back of the Pack

Eve
Eve

I might always be in the back of the running pack, but I'm addicted to it! When I miss more than a day it affects my energy, attitude, and the rest of life in general! I have had a lot of "character" building runs in the deep snow, extreme nose hair freezing cold, ankle high rain, and gale force winds over the past twenty five years and find some of those days to be the most peaceful rewarding outings of all! I'm one of those runners who is slow and steady, but goes forever and ever without ever getting tired.

August 19, 2008: HELP??

I am wondering if anyone can help me...due to the massive budget cuts of the park system, the city is not allowing any more permits until after 2009 for anything!!!

November 15th the family of the late Dr. Nancy English, Barbara Reyelts and myself are hoping to put the first annual 5k on in her memory.  We are working out the details and had hoped to use Park Point as a route because it was her favorite.

I emailed the city and then Donny who just said no...nothing...no police to help...no buildings will be open...nothing can be done...the city will not help in any way shape or form...

Sooooo....any  ideas?  Any good road routes the COUNTY owns?  Any loopholes?  Any connections?  Keeping in mind that snow may be a factor?  Anyone know the rules of Duluth?  I  have done this in Cloquet and the Twin Cities and it was easy...!

Eve...what about doinbg it at Snowflake???

Kandi - August 19, 2008 - 6:57 PM

Eve - I've sent you an e-mail.

It is too close to snow season to use Snowflake...they want a road race and George will probably have made snow by then. He also prefers to have lower traffic on the trails then we would probably have.

lakewalk???? I think if the number is under.. can't really remember, but anyway, the point is if it isn't closed to traffic then you do not need a permit/cops/etc.

either that or a section of skyline. maybe put barbara and her family to work on it, they must have a few connections ;-)

wildknits - August 20, 2008 - 12:05 AM

I would suggest the lakewalk too.

It is near Park Point and has no car traffic to stop or home and business access to contend with.

One reason, for the response from the city, is there are 2 5ks the following week on Thankgiving day. 1 on Parkpoint and 1 through downtown.

See if you can get one or many of the hotels or other businesses in Canal as sponsors or at least to use their parking lots for an hour or two.

Shane - August 20, 2008 - 9:04 AM

Which 5k is on Park Point? Those are good ideas...I am letting the family decide based upon what I find...the response frm the city has nothing to do with the other ones...they said NO permits for anything having to do with the city unti 2010 and VERY limited city support on those which were already issued!

eve - August 20, 2008 - 10:15 AM

I am not sure what it is called, they have been doing it for something like 20 years. I think it is more of a walk/fun run/jog than a race.
It would seem to me that one could do a run on the Lakewalk at that time of year without much of a problem.

From what I understand races have to pay for closing roads and stuff, so it would also cost less to do a race with no road closures.

Shane - August 20, 2008 - 11:59 AM

I was told that NO PERMITS OF ANY KIND will be issued by the city until 2010...that includes the Lakewalk...so do we all move our things to Proctor? I asked them about the Lakewalk...what is the permit for? They also told me that there was never anything about being under a certain number and not needing a permit...I am curious to find out more about that because I have also heard that!

eve - August 20, 2008 - 3:21 PM

The requirements are the same for the Lakewalk as for any park land - you need the permit, which I can no longer grant. The information you were given about not needing a permit if your event is under a certain number is not true......any event that is open to the public and held on City of Duluth park land requires a permit.

This was the response to the last email

eve - August 20, 2008 - 3:22 PM

This was the initial response I received

Thank you for your request - your event sounds like a wonderful idea.
It makes sense for you to start with me on a special event, as I do
permits for all public special events held on City of Duluth park
land. However, we have been given the directive from Administration
not to issue any more park permits for 2008 or 2009. We will only be
providing minimal service for remaining existing permits for the year
and Park Maintenance has already been given a complete list.
Regretfully, I cannot give permission to do what you are asking.

This was Donny's response...

Not only do we not have the staff support for the beach house, but shutting down the road for a race takes a tremendous amount of overtime from police, not to mention the inconvenience to the neighborhood of shutting down traffic. As Parks staff mentioned, we cannot afford to take on any additional events at this point. Sorry.

I wish I knew more about trails around the Duluth Area. What about the Munger Trail using an out and back route? The Lester River Ski Trails (works for the Duluth Duathlon) or is that not avialable because of city permits?

Tim - August 20, 2008 - 10:20 PM

You should resurrect the Roughrider!

Erik - August 20, 2008 - 11:10 PM

Wait a second, I just realized something, Dr. Nancy Ehglish, used to sing in the church choir with my mother, Barbara Reyelts also goes to the same church as well as a number of well connected community members. First Luthern is across the street from Leif Erickson park and the church uses the park regularly. I think that if Barbara got the church involved in the event, you could get some strings pulled. If you planned things right no road would have to be shut off and it would not cost the city anything.

Shane - August 20, 2008 - 11:30 PM

Does this moratorium on permits put a stick in the spokes of the NMTC trail series this fall or next year?

Joe Gerard - August 20, 2008 - 11:32 PM

I would expect that the NMTC races are fine, they have been doing them for 20 years and already been scheduled as an existing event.

Shane - August 21, 2008 - 7:58 AM

The NCTM don't get permits...they just do them...I think the city would have a hard time figuring out where we are and catching us!

I think I may have a solution...loopholes can be found if a person digs hard enough! I'll post it when I know ...for now November 15th 10 am will be the time and date!
Thanks for all the help!

We do still need volunteers and participants for These boots are Made for Walkin'...that is the 3 mile/13 mile and 26 mile fun run/walk...you can race it...just on your own clock. If you work for smdc it's only $15 otherwise $25 before Sept 3rd...long sleeved tshirts to all, bag lunches, door prizes and so much more! Great training run! Good cause!

eve - August 21, 2008 - 10:15 AM

I heard Gene say something about the NMTC races one. If I understand things correctly. The NMTC runs are technically club runs and not races.
Membership in the club is anyone who shows up to a club run and pays a buck.

Shane - August 22, 2008 - 8:33 AM

That's a good loophole...! The times are posted though...not like anyone in the city who has control of that type of thing would know the difference though!
