Jim's Blog

My name is Jim Booth, and I have been running for 35 years. I have done over a hundred marathons in that time. This blog is for us "older" runners.  If you are an older runner with questions let me know and hopefully I either have an answer or can find one.  I understand how it feels to be slower then you were and to have aches and pains where there weren't any.  Looking forward to blogging about training, nutrition, great areas to run, or last weekend's race.

June 13, 2009: Ugly Run

Do you know if you don't submit a blog BEFORE viewing it you loose everything and then you have to retype it:)

Every have one of the runs that just is plain YUCKY!!!!

That was me today. I started at Endion staion, the 26 mile mark, and planned on running to the bottom of Lemon Drop hill the 22 mile mark and back.

(Tivia) Anyone remember why it is called Lemon Drop Hill. I am old enough to remember:)

Anyway, Syd and I ran Hartley yesterday and flew. It was a blast. Starting off today I felt Slow, my feet felt like lead and I was plain tired. I thought if I took the first mile slow, I could work out the cobwebs, WRONG!!!! It never happened.

The weather was HOT, Humid and the wind was at my back going out. I was lethargic, and Slow!!!! I thought turning at 22 and running in to the wind would help. It did feel better but did not help my run. The only good thing about this run is that it is over:)

One short week before Grandma's I will train a 4, 3, and 2 mile run take Friday completely off. My daughter will be in town friday, I will make pasta at home. We will head up to the start via Voyuguer bus company. Look for her at the 3:50 mark look for me at the 4:10 mark. Say HI.

By the way I know ...It is all down hill from here, I am looking good, and I am doing great. LOL

Enjoy your day

Hey you got the bad one out of the way so Grandma's will be the greatest one!   You also got to run in the "heat and humidity"...of today to prepare you for any weather next weekend!

That was the reason I waited til 10 to run so it would be humid and hot, and I could see how it went. Well..... It wasn't pretty. Can't wait til I go to the BWCA maybe the following weekend.

I've always wondered why it was "lemon drop" hill...can you enlighten those of us who are your junior?

eve - June 13, 2009 - 5:51 PM

well yah..

there used to be a restaurant at the top to the hill where the gas station is now  called the Lemon Drop

..at least that what i think i remember ..

You don't necessarily need to be old but it helps to be a local.  The Lemon Drop restaurant used to be near the intersection of 26th Ave. E and London Road. I believe it was torn down when they added the freeway around 1988. Google "area voices lemon drop restaurant" and there are some pictures.  It brings back memories even to this 40 year old.

And how about the London House which became William's Pub in later years about a block west around where Perkins is now. Several of us got together there after running my first Grandma's in 1978! I think there were only about 600 entrants that year.

you people are  dating yourselves!

eve - June 13, 2009 - 10:28 PM

I knew that about the Lemon Drop Restaurant!!  And I'm a non-native spring chicken!!  :)

So is that hill as bad as some make it out to be during the race?!

Jamie - June 14, 2009 - 9:51 PM

No, the hill is not that bad, athough, it used to be steeper and shorter when the Lemon Drop was there.

Shane - June 14, 2009 - 9:59 PM

No..it's a small bump...Grandma's is just so flat that it seems like a big one by that time.

eve - June 15, 2009 - 1:10 PM

That was kind of my analysis too....I do some of my long runs on the scenic but didn't get that far yet.

Yay!

Check todays Duluth paper (June 17)for a picture of the old Lemon Drop Restaurant sign and story. Its on page B2

Rick in Esko - June 17, 2009 - 8:57 AM

Lemon Drop Hill is deseptive. You think you are over it at the first set of lights, but it keeps going til you clear the hotel. And yes I think it is tuff, not a bump, so is the "bump" turning off London road to Superior st and finally the Via duct "Bump" on 5th ave W. Both going up and coming down.

Good luck to all those running I will be around the 4:10 mark so I will see you there.
