May 31, 2011: TrailFitters Barefoot Running Forum

If you've heard about barefoot and minimalist running and wanted to learn more, or if you've tried it and have questions, TrailFitters has an event for you.  They will be hosting a forum on the benefits of barefoot running on Thursday night in Duluth.  The speaker will be Adam Sundberg, a local chiropractor and runner.  The event will take place at 7pm at the Fitger's Brewery Complex.  Come join the fun, learn about barefoot running, and mingle with fellow runners.  Door prizes will be drawn, and the Midi will have drinks available (cash only).

May 23, 2011: Run for Your Life

Submitted By:

Dennis Bartz

Bemidji, MN

Dennis Bartz, retired Bemidji Cross Country and Track Coach, here.  I have been putting my energy into writing a book, "Run For Your Life", the Marathon, Minnesota Style.  I coached, taught physical education, and ran races for 34 years, and now I just relax and work out when I want to.  My travels have inculded the Boston Marathon twice, Twin Cities Marathon several times, Grandma's Marathon a lot, and many others.  The most recent one was the Seattle Marathon in 2009, thirteen days after cutting my leg open with a chainsaw.  That is a story you might enjoy reading.  Long story short, the book is for sale, my cell number is 218-766-0958, email is dbartz@paulbunyuan.net, and address is 1571 Rivercrest Lane SW, Bemidji, MN 56601 if you are interested in having a copy sent to you.  $13 will cover the cost and the tax.

My running, teaching, and coaching have meant a lot to me and I thought it was important to write some ideas down.  If you are intersted, please let me know.

Thanks,

Dennis

May 18, 2011: Western Waterfront Results

The Western Waterfront Run, the 5th race of the NMTC Spring Trail Series, took place today in Duluth.  Runners who ran this race two years ago were happy to note that the temperature was not 85 degrees today.  Both the male and female winner were new to this year's series.  Scott Behling won the men's division in 26:57, and Michelle Sancartier won the women's division in 31:35.

The men's points race has narrowed to a two-person battle.  Craig Hertz is the new leader with 735 points.  Jonas Ryttie gained a point this week and trails Craig by 2 points.

The women's points race has also been narrowed to 2 people who are seperated by 2 points.  Christi Nowak leads by a wide margin in raw points, but Connie Lutkevich has the edge by 2 points after the lowest scores are dropped.

A note on the points:

One of the runners marked as unknown at the Millenium Run has been identified.  Brian Berget has belatedly been assigned 37th place in that race. All men who finished after 37th at Millenium have had their scores adjusted accordingly.  If you have a question about your points, feel free to e-mail Kris Glesener at kris@northlandrunner.com.
