May 30, 2012: Millenium Trail Run Results

153 people participated in tonight's Millenium Trail Run, the 6th race of the NMTC Spring Trail Series.  We'd like to thank Randy Back for his excellent work scouting the trails and finding the dryest areas for us to run.

Last week's trail work session was cancelled due to rain, so we will pick up again tomorrow (Thursday).  We will be working on the Ely's Peak loop of the Magney-Snively trail.  We will meet at the Magney-Snively parking lot as usual at 5pm and then drive to the Ely's Peak loop.  If you will be arriving late, you can call Kris at 218-390-4784 to see where we are.  Pizza, pop, and cookies will be served afterwards.

Our last trail work day will be this Sunday, June 3rd, from noon to 5pm.  For more information, see our trail work article.

Next week is Chester Bowl - the last race of the Spring Series.  We will have lots of prizes for series participants.  We will also have a potluck, so bring a dish to share with everyone.  You can drop your dish off at the Chester Chalet before the race.

Trails 101
If you are embarking on your first trail race or just looking to get off the beaten path, then you need to be prepared. Trail running is a separate sport altogether from road running, and it is important to be ready. The environment, terrain, attitude of participants, and overall focus are quite different from road running. It is this distinction that draws runners and non-runners alike to the sport.

One of the reasons some people are wary of trail running is that they are afraid of getting injured. The uneven terrain, rocks, roots, narrow paths, and hills causes many inexperienced individuals to become anxious about what might happen. It does take a little while to become adept at “seeing” the trail and by taking Trails 101 you will safely gain the tools to make your first experience with trails a successful and positive one!

You will learn the following:

  • Technical vs. Non-Technical trails
  • Safety
  • Fueling and equipment needs
  • Running pointers
  • Where the trails are
  • What races are out there
  • Volunteering at trail Ultras
  • Much, much more!

Register by July 1st to be entered into a drawing for a free pair of Scott Trail shoes!

Either stop by Tortoise and Hare to sign up or go to the website http://tortoiseharefootwear.com to download a registration form to mail in.

  • Classes Meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00pm until about 7:30pm at various trails around town.
  • Weekday trails will be “easy” non-technical trails with runs ranging from 2 to 4 miles.
  • There will be some optional weekend “challenge” runs which will take you on 5-8 mile runs on some of the more technical or hilly trails.
  • A calendar will be provided the first day of class at Tortoise and Hare Footwear and will include a training schedule for each month.
  • Class lasts 13 weeks, starting on July 12th and ending on October 11th.
  • Unlimited access to an experienced coach.
  • Drawings and discounts at Tortoise and Hare Footwear.
  • Technical Shirt.
  • Speakers and additional information.
  • Exercises and conditioning for your whole body!

May 23, 2012: Goat Run Results

Thanks to all who ventured out to the Goat Run tonight.  The impressive thunderstorms early in the day made for a wetter course than expected.  There's nothing like running through a puddle and not knowing how far you will sink in.  It is believed that all shoes and participants have successfully been fished out now.  A big thank you to Tony Stensland and Lisa Messerer for designing tonight's course!

UPDATE (5/24, 3:45pm): Trail work is cancelled due to the weather.

At tomorrow's trail work session, we will be working on the Ely's Peak loop of the Magney-Snively trail.  We will meet at the Magney-Snively parking lot at 5pm as usual but will then drive to the Ely's Peak portion.  If you are planning on coming late, call Kris at 218-390-4784 to get directions.  Pizza, pop, and cookies will be served afterwards.  Thanks to all who have been helping us improve the trails.
