June 30, 2009: Dogwood 5k Recap, Part 2

The Dogwood 5k took place Sunday in Saxon, Wisconsin.  Around one hundred runners and walkers took part in the twelfth annual event.  The race proceeds were used to create scholarships for area youth.  This year's scholarship winners were Corine Ofstad of Saxon and Dominic Beckman of Ironwood.  The remaining proceeds were donated to the Saxon-Gurney Lions Club.

Siblings Ben and Catie Cogger swept the awards, Ben winning the men's race in 16:45 and Catie winning the women's race in 20:27.  Their accomplishment is even more impressive considering they both participated in the Superior Vistas 60-Mile Bike Tour the day before.  Both Ben and Catie are working on the family farm in Washburn this summer before furthering their education.  Ben will embark on a Biology graduate program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.  Catie will return to Michigan Tech this fall to complete the final year of her bachelor's degree, majoring in Anthropology and Archaeology.

Lori Booth made the trip from Ironwood to participate in her first Dogwood race.  Lori runs the Whistlestop Half Marathon every year, but this was her first 5k race.  A walker for many years, Lori gradually incorporated running into her daily routine and has been hooked on running ever since.  Lori enjoyed her Dogwood experience and appreciated the friendly, laid-back, small-town atmosphere.

Glen Hill and Keith Moreland participated in the 5k run as they do every year.  Both Glen and Keith ran Grandma's Marathon last weekend and participate in as many races as they can in the summertime.  Keith is training for the Whistlestop Marathon this fall, and Glen is training for his tenth Half Voyageur Trail Marathon in July.  Glen set the course record for the 60-69 age group this year, finishing in 22:17.

Race director Mark Massoglia would like to thank all the participants and volunteers for making the race a success.

Coggers of Washburn Win Dogwood Titles

Submitted by Mark Massoglia

The brother/sister duo of Ben and Catie Cogger of Washburn, WI took the titles at the Dogwood 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk in Saxon on Sunday, June 28.

It was a story of role reversal in the men’s race.  In last year’s race, Ironwood’s Alan Peterson bested Ben Cogger by less than 20 seconds.  This year, Cogger finished ahead of Peterson with a winning time of 16:45.  The men’s course record was set in 2006 by Ryan Holm with a time of 15:51.

Catie Cogger won the women’s race with a time of 20:27, just 15 seconds behind the women’s course record set in 1999 by Sara Holewinski with a time of 20:12.

“With the current construction on Iron County Highway B, I was pleasantly surprised with the winning times of both Ben and Catie,” said Race Director Mark Massoglia.  “I honestly thought with the construction that we wouldn’t have someone break 17 minutes this year, let alone someone almost breaking a course record.”

Longtime Dogwood participant Glen Hill of Maple, WI set the 60 – 69 age group record with a time of 22:17.  “I’m really happy for Glen because he has supported our event, as well as many others, for a long time,” said Massoglia.

The Doug and Carolyn Ratkowski family of Saxon won the Family Participation trophy.

The 2009 Dogwood 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk had a total of approximately 100 participants.

“I want to thank all our volunteers for their hard work.  They are the reason that we’re able to celebrate 12 years of our event,” said Massoglia.

Massoglia also wants to thank the Saxon-Gurney Lions Club for presenting the event and the following sponsors: Giacomino Trucking, Anna B. Rose Kennels, Bob Rowe & Sons Construction, Custom Slashing Short Wood Processing, Frontier Bar and Campgrounds, Saxon Pub, Inc., Dale Ofstad & Sons Forest Products, Sharon’s Coffee Company, Rowe’s Auto Body, Northland Accounting Services, Munch’s Bear Trap Inn, and Northland Firewood Services.
