June 13, 2011: Chippewa Triathlon

The Chippewa Triathlon took place last Saturday in Cass Lake, MN.  The event consists of a 14-mile canoe, 29-mile mountain bike, and 7-mile trail run.  Most of the course runs through the Chippewa National Forest and includes the historic Pike Bay Connection.  Check out these pictures and video submitted by Eve Stein.

Olympians, Beardsley to Speak at Grandma’s Marathon

(Duluth, Minn.) Athletes and running enthusiasts will have an opportunity to hear running tips and stories from some of the sport’s all-time best during Grandma’s Marathon weekend. In conjunction with Austin-Jarrow, Grandma’s Marathon offers a series of guest speaking presentations on Friday, June 17, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Edmund Fitzgerald Hall at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC). The presentations are free and open to the public.

Friday, June 17

1:00 pm: Keith Brantly

1996 Olympian

Brantly is considered one of the most successful long distance runners in U.S. history. He enjoyed success in national and international competitions in distances ranging from the mile to the marathon. His accomplishments include being a 1996 U.S. Olympic marathon team member and five-time U.S. Olympic Trials participant in various distances. Currently, alongside a career in medical equipment sales and management, Brantly conducts inspirational and motivational seminars for corporations and special interest groups on topics related to health and fitness. He has been published in more than 100 fitness magazines, including two covers of Runner’s World.

2:00 pm: Lorraine Moller

Running Times, Four-Time Olympian and Three-Time Grandma’s Marathon Champion

Lorraine Moller, a native of New Zealand, is a three-time Grandma's Marathon champion (1979, 1980 and 1981), and held the women’s division course record of 2:29:36 for 18 years. Moller competed in four Olympics marathons and earned the bronze medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Since retiring from competitive running in 1996, she has stayed active in the running community. Her first book, On the Wings of Mercury: The Lorraine Moller Story, was published in 2007 in New Zealand. Moller is a Special Contributor to Running Times and writes regular training features for the publication.

3:00 pm: Frank Shorter

1972 Gold Medalist - U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Member

The 1972 Olympic marathon gold medalist, Frank Shorter is an inspiration to runners. Frank has accomplished many notable running milestones including: 1972 and 1976 Olympic marathon medalist, 1972 and 1976 Olympic Trials winner in 10,000m, U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, U.S. Track & Field Hall of Fame and U.S. Distance Running Hall of Fame. He is a past chairperson of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and is a current board member of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthy Competition Foundation and Boulder Center for Sports Medicine.

4:00 pm: Dick Beardsley

Grandma's Marathon Course Record Holder

Dick Beardsley is known as one of the best marathon runners in U.S. history. Winner of Grandma’s Marathon in 1981 and 1982, Dick holds the course record with a time of 2:09:37 (1981).  His most famous race, however, took place at the 1982 Boston Marathon where he crossed the finish line in a personal-best 2 hours, 8 minutes, 53 seconds, just two seconds behind Alberto Salazar. After a series of accidents, injuries and life-altering events, Dick remains a prominent figure in the running community and travels around the world to share his amazing story.

Duluth, MN June 8, 2011 –The Y’s Running Buddies program will be hosting Grandma’s Marathon record holder Dick Beardsley on Tuesday, June 14 from 5:30-6:30pm.  The presentation will take place from 5:30-6:00pm and then Dick will be available for book selling and signing from 6:00-6:30pm.

The YMCA Running Buddies program is fitness based mentoring in which youth ages 9-15 years are matched with positive adult mentors. This year, we have almost 20 matches participating in the program.  The goal is to learn about running technique, stretching, strength conditioning and nutrition while training for the YMCA Sidewalk Shuffle 5K race.   

Not only is Dick an international best selling author, but he is one of the world’s most extraordinary, respected, and compelling motivational / inspirational speakers.  Dick has spoken to countless number of groups all over the world, ranging in size from 5 people to 15,000 people!  Dick is also an accomplished TV commentator and radio announcer.  He has a gift of making people laugh, cry and most importantly, think and appreciate life to the fullest, despite any ups and downs that may come along. Dick's talks are directly from his heart and are highly inspirational.

June 1, 2011: NMTC Spring Series Recap

The NMTC Spring Trail Series concluded today with the Magney-Snivley Run off of Skyline Boulevard in Duluth.  Congratulations to all participants and to those who were able to complete every race in the series.  Special recognition goes to:

May 31, 2011: TrailFitters Barefoot Running Forum

If you've heard about barefoot and minimalist running and wanted to learn more, or if you've tried it and have questions, TrailFitters has an event for you.  They will be hosting a forum on the benefits of barefoot running on Thursday night in Duluth.  The speaker will be Adam Sundberg, a local chiropractor and runner.  The event will take place at 7pm at the Fitger's Brewery Complex.  Come join the fun, learn about barefoot running, and mingle with fellow runners.  Door prizes will be drawn, and the Midi will have drinks available (cash only).
