July 5, 2012: Voyageur Trail Work
Northern Minnesota Track Club
We still have some areas of this year's Voyageur course that need attention, and we will have a work day this Saturday (July 7th) to finish up the course. We will meet in the zoo parking lot at 9am. There are three sections of the course that need work, so we will split into three teams and carpool to the different sections.
The main activities we will be doing are mowing and pruning. If you have a weed whip, pruning sheers, or a hand saw, we would love to have your help! We will also have a few extra tools available for those who don't have them. Other items you'll need while out on the trail are water, work gloves, and safety glasses.
We appreciate all the support and help everyone has been offering - we look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
UPDATE: The city has been very supportive and is organizing a work day next Thursday (July 12th) to help get the start/finish area by the zoo in good shape. This area has some minor washout damage, and we would like to fix it as much as possible as people will be going through it in a large pack. More information available here.
UPDATE 2: Lisa Messerer will be running the course at 10:30am on Sunday starting from the zoo if anyone would like to check out the course.
July 2, 2012: Voyageur Update
Northern Minnesota Track Club
I am happy to announce that the Half Voyageur Trail Marathon will be held as usual this year. The race will take place on July 14th at 6am at the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, MN. We are still working on the details for the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra and are hopeful that it too can be held this year.
The recent floods have severely damaged the usual Voyageur course. The Fond du Lac and Jay Cooke areas were particularly hard hit, and we lost several good trails in those areas. This year's route for the Half Voyageur will start at the zoo, go as far as the powerlines, and go back to the zoo. It is not completely out-and-back; it's more of a "lollipop" style course. The other big change is the route from the zoo to Magney-Snively. The usual gravel road is washed out, and the new route will include lots of interesting single-track trails. We currently have 22-23 miles of trails mapped out for the Half Voyageur. We are working on adding in a few more miles and evaluating whether or not 2 loops of this course will work for the Voyageur Ultra (50 miles).
Interested in helping out at the Half Voyageur? We need several volunteers and would love to have you help. We are in need of the following volunteers:
- July 7th - Mowing day. We are in need of volunteers with weed whips and trimmers.
- July 13th - Marking the course.
- July 14th - Aid station volunteers on race day.
If you are able to help on any of these days, we would love to hear from you! Contact Kris at email@example.com or 218-390-4784 if you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions about the race.

June 7, 2012: Chester Bowl Run Results
Thanks to all who participated in the NMTC Spring Trail Series this year!
The series concluded last night at Chester Bowl. Eric Atkinson won the men's series and has won two in a row now after his successful debut last fall. The women's series came down to one point with Sara Frederickson edging out Leslie Semler by the slimmest of margins. Congrats Eric and Sarah!
Thanks to all who came out and participated in the series this spring. It was great to see the NMTC regulars as well as a lot of new faces this year. The first two races had 200 participants, far over the previous record of 157.
The next NMTC events are the Half Voyageur and Full Voyageur, which are run on trails between the Zoo and Carlton in July. The Half Voyageur is a marathon, and the full Voyageur is a 50-miler. We need a lot of volunteers to put these races on and would love to have you help out if you are not planning on participating. Please contact Kris Glesener at 218-390-4784 or email@example.com if you would like to volunteer.
The Fall Series will commence on September 5th at Lester Park. Besides a different order to the races this year, we also have a new race: Grand Portage. This event replaces the Snowflake race and will be run on the Grand Portage and Gill Creek trails in Jay Cooke State Park in Esko.
Best of luck to everyone running one of the Grandma's races!
