Peterson Becomes First Three-Time Dogwood Champion
Recent Ironwood High School graduate Alan Peterson became the first three-time men's champion at the Thirteenth Dogwood 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk in Saxon on Sunday, June 27.
Peterson, who also won in 2007 and 2008, ran the Dogwood course in a time of 16:34. Of the 13 Dogwood runs held, 11 of them have been won with times under 17 minutes. The men's course record was set in 2006 by Ryan Holm with a time of 15:51.
Kari Strand of Ironwood won her second title of the season with a time of 21:50. Strand, who also won the John Jarvi Jr. Memorial 10K in May, is the current "Run the Range" leader after two events. The women's course record was set in 1999 by Sara Holewinski with a time of 20:12.
Longtime Dogwood participant Glen Hill of Maple, WI set the 60 – 69 age group record for a second consecutive year with a time of 21:53, besting his 2009 time of 22:17. "Glen is one of the true ambassadors of the sport of running in our region," said Race Director Mark Massoglia.
The Dan and Sharon Ofstad family of Saxon won the Family Participation trophy.
The 2010 Dogwood 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk had a total of 117 participants with 90 runners and 27 walkers.
"This is the first time since 2006 that we had at least 90 runners, with the vast majority being from the Gogebic Range," said Massoglia. "Most of our age groups had anywhere from 9 to 13 runners."
In addition to the many volunteers who helped in the Dogwood, Massoglia also wants to thank the Saxon-Gurney Lions Club for presenting the event and the following sponsors: Giacomino Trucking, Anna B. Rose Kennels, Bob Rowe & Sons Construction, Custom Slashing Short Wood Processing, Frontier Bar and Campgrounds, Saxon Pub, Inc., Dale Ofstad & Sons Forest Products, Rowe's Auto Body, Northland Accounting Services, Munch's Bear Trap Inn, and Northland Firewood Services.
